Et unde idem Iohannem per Iohannem Martel attornatum suum queritur quod predictus Hugo die lune proxima post festum Corporis Christi anno regni domini Regis nunc Anglie quarto vi et armis scilicet gladiis arcubus et sagittis clausum domos et quandam cistam ipsius Iohannis apud Stefford Hithe fregit et quandam pixidem cum cartis scriptis et aliis munimentis in eadem pixide contentis conculcauit et consumpsit et alia enormia et co ad graue dampnum et co. et contra pacem et co unde dicit. Et dampnum habet ad valenciam viginti librarum. Et inde producit sectam et co. Et predictus Hugo in propria persona sua venit et defendit vim et iniuriam quando et co. Et dicit quod ipse in nullo est culpabilis de transgressione predicta prout idem Iohannes superius versus eum queritur. Et de hoc ponit se super patriam. Et predictus Iohannes similiter. Text (English translation)Essex. Hugo Ive of Grays Thurrock attached to answer John Haukyn on a plea that he broke the houses and a certain chest belonging to the said John at Stifford Hithe and crushed and destroyed charters writings and muniments contained in the said chest and other enormities to the grave damage of the said John and against the peace of the king. And the said John appeared by John Martel his attorney and alleged that the said Hugo on 17 June 1381 with force and arms viz. swords, bows and arrows broke the close, houses and a certain chest of the said John at Stifford Hithe and crushed and destroyed a certain chest together with charters writings and other muniments in the said chest. And John had damages of £20. Hugo appears in person and say that he is not guilty of the alleged trespass and places himself on the country. And John likewise. Sheriff to summon jurors for quindene of Trinity 5 Richard II. Sheriff does not return writ. Sheriff to make jurors come in Octave of St Michael 6 Richard II.
