21/02/1379 | Maidstone,Kent | In an assize of novel disseisin, Ralph Wardale accused with Richard Brynchesle and Matilda his wife, Thomas Ingold, Adam de Crokendon of unjustly disseising John de Welton and Margaret his wife of a tenement in Lewisham. Richard and Matilda appear, but all the others (including Ralph Wardale) do not come. After an adjournment, Richard does not come, but Matilda asks to defend her right against John de Welton and Margaret. She claims that she holds the tenement from the manor of Lewisham which is of ancient demesne where the writ of the Lord King does not run, except for the little writ of right. John de Welton and Margaret claim they hold their tenement freely. Matilda claims that she has a copy of Domesday Book showing the manor is ancient demesne. The case is adjourned, and Matilda is told to return with her copy of Domesday. John and Margaret appear again, represented by William Makenade, but Matilda fails to appear. Therefore the case is put to a jury, which states that John and Margaret were freely seised of the tenement until the said Richard and Matilda unjustly disseised them to the damage of John and Margaret of five marks. The jury also state that Thomas, Adam and Ralph Wardale were not involved in the disseisin. Richard and Matilda in mercy. John and Margaret in mercy for their false claim against Thomas, Adam and Ralph who are all quit. | JUST 1/1491 m. 3d |
