27/06/1386 | West Donyland,Essex | Isabella Warman, a hereditary bondswoman ('nativa de sanguine') pays marriage fine of 12d to marry Adam Mychel de la Hethe. - Thomas Adecok surrenders a cottage and three rod unfree land ('terra nativa') to the benefit of Adam Mychel and Isabella his wife and their heirs; they swear fealty and pay 40d entry fine. | ERO, D/DHt M145 | The manor of West Donyland, East Donyland and Greenstead was an outlying part of the liberty of Colchester. Lord of the manor was St John's abbey [VCH Essex, vol. ix, pp. 409-14]. There is no direct evidence that the Adam Mychel de la Hethe is identical with Adam Michel of Colchester. The latter was a burgess of Colchester, married to Johanna (in 1383) and had three servants in 1377 [TNA, E 179/107/54 m. 4]. It is not very likely that at an advanced age he married an unfree woman. It might, however, explain Adam Michel's disappearance from the Colchester borough court rolls for several years after 1383. |
