3751 | Petition from the poor men of Cadney and Howsham | The poor men of Cadney and Howsham, tenants of the Prior of Newstead on Ancholme, complain that whereas their ancestors held their lands of the king, the current Prior has encroached upon their rights and customs, taking rent, fines and services unlawfully. Furthermore on 28th August 1380 the Prior came with a great multitude of armed men and took their carts, ploughs and equipment and carried them off to the castle of Somerton, so that their lands were left untended, to their great ruin. They ask that the Prior be made to answer for these crimes according to the common law. | Newstead Priory,Cadney,Lincolnshire; Somerton Castle,Navenby,Lincolnshire; Howsham,Lincolnshire; Cadney,Lincolnshire | Petitioner | View Incident page |
