25/01/1395	Harlow,Essex	The jury presents that John Lok, villein ('nativus de sanguine') has died since the last court, and that on the day he died he held 17 acres unfree land ('terre native') and 1 acre of meadow with a messuage and one cottage held in villeinage ('in bondagio'). He also held a messuage in Harlow market for which he owed rent and services of 9s 6 1/2 d per year, 2 days of haymaking services ('furcatio') at 'Le Est Mad' and 2 suits of court per year. Richard, his son and heir, is 18 years and is bound to pay relief ('relevium', death tax). Richard pledge for the relief is William Lok. Richard does fealty, as it is the custom. The jury also presents that John Lok, villein, on his death bed surrendered into the hands of the lord by the hands of Richard Foster, messor, and witnessed by Thomas atte Crunch, William Lok and Richard Hore 4 acres of unfree land for the benefit of Richard, his son, to be hold by the rod at will. Alice, formerly the wife of the said John comes and relinquishes any rights she has in the said 4 acres for the benefit of Richard and his heirs. Richard pays 6s 8d entry fine and does fealty.	ERO, D/DEs M1	John Lok must have died between 9 October 1394 and 25 January 1395. He was a villein (or hereditary bondsmen) who was, judging from the size of his tenements, very well-off.
