26/11/1390 | Harlow,Essex | The court refers to a presentment by the jury in a previous court, dated 17 May 1389, that Richard Corbel held three messuages (which are now one messuage) in villeinage, which he transferred before he died by deed to his wife Benedicta. When he died he was only in possession of one acre of villein land ('terra native') in 'Le Mellefeld' and a pightle next to 'Littlewellemoor'. Richard was his son and heir. And because of the said reason [i.e. the illegal transfer of unfree land by deed] all of Richard's tenements were seized into the hand of the lord, and Bendicta distrained to surrender the deeds. She put herself on the mercy of the lord and surrendered the deeds which were put in the bag of court records ('in bagga curie'). Richard, the son, appears and beseeched the lord to grant him and his heirs his fathers tenements. This is granted and he will hold the tenements by the rod at the will of the lord. For the messuage(s) he pays 38s entry fine, and for the pightle 2s. ... It is ordered to enquiry which is the best animal ('melior bestis') of Richard's father to pay as heriot at the next court. ... Benedicta has to satisfy the lord for the repair of the messuages while in the hand of the lord under pain of 40d. | ERO, D/DEs M1 |

The lord grants half the messuage and the reversion of the other half to the aforesaid John, William and Cecilia and the heirs of the latter and Richard not yet born. Thery pay 10s entry fine. Subsequently Cecilia gave birth to a son called Richard. | ERO, D/DEs M1 | Richard Corbel senior died in 1389 and his son survived him only by six years. |
