3249 | Rebellion of John Wattes and others | Inquisition held at Stalham on Monday 15th July 1381 by oath etc. who [the jurors] say that John Wattes of Scottow was a common raiser and originator of all evil deeds perpetrated at the time of the rising, against the peace, crown and dignity of the lord king. John Filmond of Buxton was leader and chief of those wrongdoers. John Gentilhomme was likewise. Henry Reyse of Dilham acknowledged that he was the first assaulter at the killing of Robert Salle, knight. John atte Chaumbre of Potter Heigham acknowledged that he was one of those who killed Reginald Ecclis at the time of the rising he struck him in the head with a 'vyflo' until he killed him, and afterwards beheaded him. Alan Dykke was a chief proclaimer at the time of the rising, by which men of various hundreds assembled and rose up. John Skondere of Catfield did likewise.
