William Langemere rises up and burns documents belonging to Thomas Bardolf
Details
Norfolk. William Langemere of Frettenham, arrested on suspicion and brought before the said justices, and immediately accused by Thomas Bardolf of being a captain and congregator of the king's people at the time of the rising, against the peace and dignity of the crown, in various villages in the county of Norfolk, and that he threatened Thomas's life and limb unless he gave court rolls, rentals and other records pertaining to his inheritance. And the aforesaid Thomas, in fear of his death and in order to save his life, gave up his aforesaid court rolls, rentals and records to William, who immediately burnt them on Monday 17th June 1381 at Frettenham. And because of this it was asked off him how he wishes to acquit himself of the said felonies and treasons, the same William did not deny the said treasons and felonies, but plainly confessed to them before the aforesaid justices. Judgement is therefore given that William should be decapitated and that his head should be placed upon the pillory and should remain there. Under condition that it must not be taken down under pain of losing life and limb. (Beheaded).
