On Saturday 15th June 1381 John de Batesford, clerk, with many people gathered and associated with him, came to Ipswich with force and arms against the peace and dignity of the crown, and made a proclamation that all men should be ready and prepared to rise and depart with him and his associates and to do what he commands them to in his name. And that night he went with his associates to the house of Thomas Sampson at Harkstead, and to associate the said Thomas with him.
